Noun endings in ENGLISH - (terminaciones de sustantivos en inglés)

By knowing typical endings of words that identify nouns, adjectives, or adverbs, students can improve their vocabulary quickly and easily. This will also greatly improve reading comprehension. If you are reading, and come across a word that you don't know, follow these steps:

1. try to identify the part of speech (noun, adjective, adverb, verb, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, or interjection).
2. look at the root for similarities to known words.
3. if possible, try to determine if the word is adding something positive or negative to the sentence.
4. don't forget about your native language since English and may other languages share Greek and Latin roots.
5. look at the prefix for added meaning (I will cover this in a future article).
6. use context clues to aid in comprehension.

SAY vs TELL

THERE ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN "SAY" AND "TELL" EVEN THOUGH THEIR MEANINGS ARE QUITE SIMILAR. The main meaning of tell is to "say or write something to someone." The main meaning of say is to "use your voice to express something in words." However, there are some clear and easy rules to follow about when to use these two words.

Usage rules for Tell and Say 

Tell is used only to instruct or inform, and when the receiver of the information is included as an object of the verb. Do not use for quotes.

• Has she told you the good news, yet?

• The police officer told him to stop. [NOT The police offer told him, "Stop."]
• Can you tell me what happened?

Difference in meaning between EXPLANATION and EXPLICATION

Always use "explanation" UNLESS you are defending a philosophical or scientific thesis. "Explication" is a word in the specialized language of philosophy and the sciences. You would "explicate" your interpretation of Kantian philosophy or "string theory" physics by giving a detailed lengthy defense of your thesis. Explication is explanation of the abstract, the abstruse. Nowadays "explication" is creeping into general vocabulary by people who want to sound "intellectual" though they probably are clueless. Stay with "explanation."

Sour grapes

 a. Something that one cannot have and so disparages as if it were never desirable.

b. If you say that something someone says is sour grapes, you mean that they said it because they are jealous 

c. Something you say when someone pretends not to be jealous

The expression "WEAK AT THE KNEES"
